Natural Support for Goat Anemia

Horse-n-Bear Ranch | The Herb Peddler

Goats can become anemic after heavy parasite loads, kidding, or illness. Pale eyelids, weakness, and poor appetite are common signs.
This article offers safe, natural ways to support red blood cell health using ingredients you can find at most feed or farm stores.

⚕️ Fastest Recovery Support

(When veterinary care isn’t available)

💉 Injection Option

  • Iron Dextran (Ferrodex) – 1–2 mL IM
    • Inject in the neck muscle. Aspirate before injecting to ensure you are not in a vein.
  • Vitamin B12 – 1 mL IM
  • Or Fortified B Complex (Vita Jec B)

🍯 Oral Iron Support Plan

  • Blackstrap Molasses – 1 tablespoon in water, twice daily
  • Red Cell® – Follow label directions for body weight (approx. 1 tsp per 50 lbs daily).
  • Vitamin B-Complex – 1–2 mL daily until pink color returns to eyelids.
  • Liquid Chlorophyll — nutrient rich, blood builder, and gentle detoxifier

Optional herbal additions (mix into warm water or molasses):

  • 🌿 Nettle Leaf – Rich in natural iron and chlorophyll
  • 🌿 Yellow Dock Root – Supports iron absorption
  • 🌿 Dandelion Root – Promotes healthy liver and digestion

🐐 Homemade “Goat Iron Tonic”

(Makes about 1 quart)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Blackstrap Molasses
  • ½ cup Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (with the “mother”)
  • 2 cups Warm Water
  • 2 tbsp Kelp Powder
  • 2 tbsp loose Nettle Leaf or 2 tsp Nettle Leaf Tincture
  • 1 tsp Yellow Dock Root Tincture
  • 1 tsp Dandelion Root Tincture
  • 30-60 mL (1-2 oz) Nature’s Sunshine Liquid Chlorophyll EF

Directions:

  1. Combine warm water, molasses, and apple cider vinegar; stir until the molasses dissolves.
  2. Add kelp powder, herbal tinctures, and liquid chlorophyll; stir or shake well.
  3. Store in a quart jar in the refrigerator for up to 3 months. Shake well before each use.

Dosage:

  • Adult Goats: 10–15 mL orally, twice daily
  • Kids: 5 mL orally, twice daily

The apple cider vinegar improves mineral absorption and supports digestion.

🧭 Additional Tips

  • Check eyelids daily with FAMACHA — they should be pink, not pale or white.
  • Control parasites with rotation, browse feeding, and herbal wormers.
  • Offer free-choice minerals with copper and selenium.
  • Provide clean water — dehydration worsens anemia.
